Day of Love ♡

On Valentine’s Day, the Lamar’s Middle School participated in a day-long community service activity called Day of Love. The students were split into teams and were assigned different projects. The students and teachers prepared for this day for weeks in advance, and, finally, the day arrived to carry out their projects! After enjoying Chick-fil-A and donuts for breakfast, the students listened as Mr. Brashier delivered a Valentine’s-themed devotional in the new gym. Then it was off to spread love all around town for these 6th-8th graders!

The pictures below are from each of the community service activities.

The students on the Matlock, Hogg, and Tate teams put together “blessing bags” through Central Methodist Church. The sixth graders sorted food and wrote notes to the people receiving these bags.

The students on the Shaffer and Madden teams spent the day with Pre-K students. The middle schoolers enjoyed reading and socializing with the elementary students. Pictured is Cooper Gordy reading to some of the students.

The students on the Mabry and McCormick teams put together candy bags and wrote Valentine’s cards for the Brookdale Valentine’s party. After preparing the supplies at school, they travelled to Brookdale and enjoyed spending time with the residents.

I was able to join Mrs. Hendricks’s class and had an amazing day! Our group made sensory therapy items to distribute at the Brookdale Senior Living facility. We sewed yarn, zippers, buttons, and pom-poms to two blankets that were placed in Brookdale’s main common area. The residents can now use these blankets while they visit with each other and watch TV. The eighth graders in my group also made putty for the residents to play with. After making the blankets and putty at school, the students travelled to Brookdale to distribute the items and socialize with the residents.

After all the teams completed their projects, their day was not over yet. The students took buses to Skate Odyssey and ended the day with a skate party! Looking back, all of the middle schoolers really appreciated the Day of Love. They had such a productive day and had so much fun doing their projects.
