Veterans Day
We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.
– Ronald Reagan
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, World War I officially ended. This day, originally designated Armistice Day and later Veteran’s Day, has henceforth been a day to honor the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country. This year, Lamar School held our annual Veteran’s Day program. All grades, Pre-K through 12th as well as parents, were gathered to celebrate and honor veterans on this special day. This program not only acted as an event to honor and celebrate the veterans across America, but also to honor and celebrate Lamar parents and alumni deployed or serving in Meridian at the Naval Air Station.
Our keynote speaker, Lt. Col. Sam deGeneres, the father of a senior, freshman and seventh grader, gave a detailed speech of his time in the armed forces, as well as the heroic duties that brought him and his family to Meridian. His service to our country is something that we will be ever thankful for. Lamar School was also presented a flag flown on the USS John C. Stennis, gifted to us by Commander Pavao “Ponch” Huldisch in response to Lamar’s gifts for the crew of his ship last year. Both Lt. Col. deGeneres, and Commander Huldisch reminded us as a school of how honor and respect for veterans is a vital and touching attribute. As a school, we thank Lt. Co. deGeneres and Commander Huldisch and their families. We thank the families of these Veterans who have contributed insurmountably to our school and across the country. And for their priceless service, we thank and honor our veterans.
