Batter Up!

The basketball team has the “New Gym”, the football team has the recently upgraded Grey-Cobb field, and now the Lamar Raider baseball team has the new and improved Jim Wall Field ready just in time for the season opener. With an infield of entirely turf and brand new stands, players and fans alike are ready to see what the 2023 baseball season holds in store.

As of right now the raiders have a record of 3-3 on their home field, and they are just getting started. When asked about how he thought the season would go, Lawson Goodman said, “I think that we have a great team with a lot of talent. Some people underestimate us because we are young, but we can hit the ball well and play the field close to perfection.” Lawson isn’t wrong about the team being young, with only 2 seniors, John Powell and Lawson himself, the starting line up consists mostly of sophomores and a few juniors, but they don’t let that hold them back. Multiple players hold a batting average of at least .300 right now with Lawson leading the pack with a batting average of .358. The team also has a fairly strong pitching arsenal with players like Ty Wiggins, Ty Herrington, Wes Pritchard, and John Powell all throwing their fair share of pitches from the mound. From hitting to pitching and all that in between the Lamar Raiders seem to have a pretty good shot at being very good this year, but will they live up to the expectations? I guess you’ll have to come out to Jim Wall field at some point and see for yourself.
