Our Comrade the Cashier

Author: Caroline Hodges

Everyday when we go to the cafeteria, we are greeted with the smiling faces from the ladies who check us out. More times than not, we don't take the time to even smile back, much less get to know them. Recently, I took the time to sit down with one of our cooks and cashiers from our cafeteria.

Shaconda Hill comes from a bigger family than most. I assume that is where she learned to be so bubbly and thoughtful. Whether it is just saving kids her amazing cookies she bakes fresh every morning for lunch, or memorizing your name and lunch number, Shaconda always makes you feel valued and loved. She is consistently in high spirits and never without a smile on her face. Everyone can truly see the dedication and love she has for her job and all the kids. It really is the little things that can turn someone's whole day around. If you are having a bad day, seeing her cheerful attitude and bright and comforting smile can help you smile, too.  No amount of words can express the gratitude that we have for Shaconda and the rest of the cafeteria staff. I think I can speak for all of the students and faculty at Lamar when I say we deeply appreciate everything the cafeteria staff does for us, and that their hardwork and dedication to us does not go unnoticed, truly. So next time you go through the line at break or lunch, make sure to smile at Shaconda, and tell her thanks for all she does!
